What is Koormasanam?

Its an age old practice to use Koormaasanam (Tortoise shaped bench) for nithyakarma (daily rituals) such as during Sandhyavandhanam, Mantra Japam etc. While doing Sandhyavandhanam before starting the Japam, there is a mantra to be recited which mentions us to recite " Sri Koormo devata Aasane Viniyokaha.....Koormasanaya Namah"

Koormasanam used by Acharyas!

Our poorvacharyas have used Koormasanam for their daily rituals. A stone Koormaasanam used as a seat by Swami Desikan for his nityakarmas can be seen in Sathyagalam in Karnataka, where Swami Desikan stayed for 12 years. When Swami was in Satyagalam, he saw two Koormas (tortoises) following him back home when he was returning from his daily prayers from the banks of river Kaveri. Later that night, Lord Sriman Narayana appeared in his dream and revealed that the tortoises were His manifestations and instructed Swami to use them as his seat. The next day, Swami Desikan found two stone Koormasanam at the place and Swami started using it for his Nithyakarma. One of these is now in Satyakalam, the other is in Swami Desikan's Thiurmaaligai in SriRangam.
