Athi Varadar is one among the 4 Brahma Kararchita Varadaja moorthies , carved out of Athi Tree by Vishwakarma in Kritha Yuga. This moorthi was the main deity (Moola Moorthi) in the Grabhagraha, i.e inside PunyaKooti Vimana, until early 16th century.
Athi Varadan – Lord Varadarajan is in a silver casket inside the temple tank of Kanchi Vardharaja Perumal Temple. The archa moorthy of Lord Atthi Varadar made of Atthi wood, is consecrated in the four-pillared mandapam inside the Ananda Saras. Athi Varadan- is taken out once in 40 years and placed outside for worship. This event took place last in 1979 and the next one is slated to be in this year around July 2019.
Please note that this vigraham can be placed only in horizontal position and can't be placed vertically.
